รางวัลออสการ์ สาขาถ่ายภาพยอดเยี่ยม เป็นหนึ่งในรางวัลออสการ์โดยสถาบันศิลปะและวิชาการทางภาพยนตร์ที่มอบให้กับผู้ถ่ายภาพยนตร์ ในปีแรกของการมอบรางวัล ผู้ถ่ายภาพยนตร์อาจจะได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงจากผลงานการถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์หลายๆ เรื่อง เช่น จอร์จ บาร์นเนส ได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงสาขานี้จากภาพยนตร์ถึง 3 เรื่อง ดังนั้นการมอบรางวัลในปีถัดมาจึงไม่มีการประกาศชื่อผู้ที่ได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงอย่างเป็นทางการ

ในที่สุด ในปีค.ศ. 1931 จึงได้เปลี่ยนเป็นผู้ที่ได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงจะต้องมาจากภาพยนตร์เรื่องเดียวเท่านั้น นอกจากนี้ในช่วงปีค.ศ. 1939-1967 (ยกเว้นปีค.ศ. 1957) ได้มีการแยกประเภทของรางวัลเป็นภาพยนตร์สีและภาพยนตร์ขาวดำ ซึ่งนับตั้งแต่การยกเลิกการแบ่งประเภทดังกล่าว ภาพยนตร์ขาวดำเรื่องล่าสุดที่ได้รับรางวัลนี้ คือ Schindler's List (ปีค.ศ. 1993)

สิ่งที่น่าจดจำในประวัติศาสตร์ออสการ์คือ ในปีค.ศ. 1935 Hal Mohr เป็นบุคคลแรกและบุคคลเดียวที่ได้รับรางวัลออสการ์โดยที่ไม่ได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงเลย ซึ่งเขาได้รับรางวัลออสการ์สาขานี้จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง A Midsummer Night's Dream
